Movies are getting longer. Since 2000, the average runtime of a Top 10 box office hit has increased by nearly 20 minutes. The "90-minute comedy" is extinct; the "150-minute franchise epic" is the new standard.
As ticket prices rise, audiences (and studios) equate length with value. A 3-hour runtime signals "Event Cinema" warranting an IMAX premium. Short films are relegated to streaming.
